What are cookies and how are they used?

Some websites store information in a small text file called a "cookie," on your hard disk. Cookies usually contain information about you and your preferences for the website.

A cookie can store only the information you provide, or the choices you make, while visiting a website. For example, a site cannot determine your email address unless you send it to the site, such as by submitting it in a web form. Allowing a website to create a cookie does not give the site access to the rest of your computer.

We use cookies to keep track of your shopping list in the Education Bookstore and to customise the Resource Centre for individual subscribers.

Your browser will give you some options for dealing with cookies. For our site, we recommend that you accept cookies.

Security

Shopping online at hi.com.au is safe and secure.

We use the industry-standard Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) technology to prevent your credit card details from being intercepted while you are online. When you reach a page where you are asked to supply credit card details there will be three features on this page indicating that you are on a secure website:

  • a small lock in the status bar
  • the VeriSign authentication logo
  • the web address should start with https:// (the 's' stands for 'secure').

By clicking on the lock you will be presented with details of our certificate of authentication. Important points on this certificate are:

  • that the date range hasn’t expired
  • the certificate was issued to www.hi.com.au
  • in the Certification Path tab the certificate was issued by VeriSign and has a status of OK.

If you require more information on the validity of our certificate click on the VeriSign logo. This will bring up a page from the VeriSign organisation that will authenticate the hi.com.au certificate.

hi.com.au uses registration information for internal purposes only. We will not sell your information or share it with outsiders. For comprehensive information about how we protect the privacy of our website users, please see our Privacy Policy.

Search tips

Education Bookstore
You can search the Education Bookstore by subject, title, author or ISBN. If you want to refine your search further you can select a level, a resource type and a publisher/distributor.

For example, if you know exactly which book you are looking for you can type in the title, author’s name or ISBN and hit "go".

If you know you need an ancient history textbook for junior secondary students type "history" and "ancient" in the text field and select "Junior secondary" from the "Select level" drop-down menu. You can further refine you search by choosing a resource type e.g. "Electronic" for CD-ROM and Web products.

Resource Centre
You can search the Resource Centre by keyword. For example, if you need some information on erosion you just type "erosion" in the text field and hit "Go". This will return a list of Infobases related to erosion.
