About the authors

Sue Burnham

Sue Burnham has been actively involved in Japanese education for over twenty years. This includes a long career in secondary schools, teaching classes from Years 7 to 12. She has taught LOTE methodology at Monash University and Japanese language to adult students at Melbourne University's Horwood Language Centre. Sue has also worked at the Japan Foundation's Sydney Language Centre, organising and presenting in-services for Japanese teachers in Australia, USA and New Zealand. Sue is the lead author of the highly successful Kimono course and the Shinkansen reader series. She is also the lead author of the Ima! 1 course, and the Ima! 2 course which was recently awarded Best Secondary Teaching and Learning package in the 2002 Australian Awards for Excellence in Educational Publishing. Sue was involved in the Hai! series, stages 1 to 4.

Michael Sedunary

Michael Sedunary taught French and Italian for many years in secondary schools. He was the co-author of the ground-breaking and highly successful Avanti! course, and went on to write or co-write a number of Heinemann Languages courses, among them Sempre avanti!, Forza!, Ça bouge !, Ça alors !, Ayo!, Feuerwerk and Kimono. His most recent work has been on the Japanese course, Hai! Michael's comprehensive understanding of how language works and is acquired, combined with his trademark humour, has shaped the development of Heinemann Languages courses, setting them apart from others and making them very popular with teenage learners.

Takanori Hayakawa

Takanori Hayakawa, co-author of the Hai! 1 Coursebook, has taught at Niddrie Secondary College since 1999. Takanori has presented professional development seminars for the JLTAV and DEET, has been a VCE examiner and was involved in the development of teacher support materials.

Trudi Sampson

Trudi Sampson is the author of the Hai! 2 Teacher's Resource and Assessment Kit, coordinating author of the Hai! 5/6 Coursebook, and one of the authors of the Hai! 5/6 Teacher’s Resource and Assessment Kit. Trudi is an experienced secondary school teacher of Japanese. She has been a Year 12 (VCE) examiner and has been involved in curriculum development. Trudi is a co-author of Hai, Ima! Workbook and has also written material for the Japan Forum.

Yoshie Burrows

Yoshie teaches at Loreto College, Ballarat (VIC), and is a Year 12 (VCE) examiner. Yoshie has extensive teaching experience and a well-developed understanding of Japanese language education in the Middle Years.

Teruko Sharif

Teruko teaches at St Aloysius College, Milson’s Point (NSW). Teruko brings valuable teaching experience of, and insights to, boys and language learning in the Middle Years. She also examines at the Year 12 (HSC) level.

Ayumi Dalpadado

Ayumi teaches part-time at Davidson High School, French’s Forest (NSW) and is a Lecturer in the Faculty of Education, University of Technology Sydney. Recently, she was also the Acting Japanese Consultant at NSW Department of Education and Training.
